Conclusion of Tree Management Programme
Over the previous few winter seasons the greens team have been working hard on improving all aspects of tree care on the golf course and surrounding areas. Over the next two year period and predominantly in the non playing season we hope to complete the programme, inclusive of not only tree removal, but re planting, pruning, moving and adding or removing tree care products such as stakes, ties and guards.
Some trees have already been marked up and are due to be removed, although this will not necessarily happen immediately as there is still a lot of work to get through. On starting the tree work this autumn/winter we will be trying to work in areas of the golf course, rather than doing specific trees, to minimise disruption and to carry out works efficiently.
As already mentioned there is more than just tree removal to the programme and tree health is extremely important, as is having the right tree in the right location. Therefore a large portion of the works will include planting, pruning and general health of trees. Going forward we will also be looking at reducing the amount of bare soil around the base of trees, where possible.
When selecting trees for removal the greens committee have devised a legend to adhere to, therefore avoiding any personal agendas and maintaining a common goal of improving the condition of the golf course within a sustainable manor.
The legend is as follows:
- Dead, diseased and damaged limbs or trees removed
- Limbs below 8ft removed (for ease of mowing)
- Out of place, overcrowded and non deciduous trees removed within reason
- Poplar trees to be removed near to and affecting the performance of any fine turf
- Trees affecting line of play
- Trees affecting greens health
